Creating A Snug

Making a room more cozy is always a good thing. Choose a space in your home where you can retreat to relax, read a book, enjoy visiting with family or friends, a place without your phone, tv, or computer. A place to take ten and rejuvenate during your day. Include these things in your room to make it inviting and comfortable:

Comfy furniture .

Soft warm lighting and lots of natural light if possible.

Fireplace or other room accessories such as soft fairy lights placed in lanterns placed around the room that will make your room inviting.

Lots of soft blankets and pillows, even floor cushions.

Baskets for storing blankets.

Add candlelight to your space.

Add some green plants either fresh or faux.

Decorate in such a way that you and any visitors want to live in that room so to speak.

Furniture should be arranged to make your room more tight and close together to create a safe, snug feeling.

Warm colors or light colors on your walls.

If you have wood floors, add a rug.

Create a book nook.

Wear a cozy sweater and soft warm socks.

Have a puzzle and some games in your snug room.

Bring the outdoors in and put some natural branches in your room.

Maybe you have heard of Hygge which is a Danish word meaning calm, comfortable. Finding pleasure in gentle soothing things with no frustration or distraction and enjoying time with loved ones including family and friends.Sounds pretty heavenly at this point. You more or less surround yourself with things you love. There are varying pronunciations but I will just go with “hoo-gia”. This word describes the whole point of designing a snug in your home. “Snug as a bug in a rug”, might just take on some new meaning here. Let me guide you through the steps to help you craft a snug, a place of refuge and respite to recharge each day.

Get Comfy

Whether it’s new or old your furniture needs to be comfortable. You can also make your snug more comfortable with the placement of your furniture. If your furniture is older and you need to cover it, you can get fancy and cover your furniture with slipcovers (lots of styles to choose from) however I just decided to cover my couch with a couple of soft Christmas looking blankets that matched. I nipped and tucked here and there and actually like it once I finished it. It created a very soft place to land. Then I layered my blankets with pillows.

Sheets might be an option too. Just make sure your slipcovers are comfy and stay put when guests sit down. You want to create a place where you or your guests want to stay for awhile and relax.

Arrange your couch and chairs so they are fairly close together and create a tight friendly fit. Make sure your furniture is so you can easily talk with your family and friends. You can get cozy and creative in your furniture arrangement. Just take a moment to survey your room and then think about what would present the best options for making your room look inviting.

Light Your Room

You may want to start by choosing a room with lots of natural light so during the day you can let the sunshine in! There are other ways to add touches of light that will make your room look magical and inviting. Let me share a list with you that will “turn the light bulb”,” pun intended” on for you to create a room that is warm and comfortable.

  • You can never go wrong with twinkle lights or fairy lights. Place them in various areas of the room. Hang them overhead like they are floating in air. Put some in natural branches displayed in your room. Leave your overhead lights off. You want your room to have a cozy glow.
  • Place some unique lamps with soft light around your room.
  • Maybe even hang a Swedish star lantern. They are made of paper and have a bulb inside. Hang it in a corner or in a window.
  • Put some soft warm light bulbs in your lamps instead of cool lightbulbs.

Fireplace Ambiance

Nothing tops a fireplace when it comes to cozy and comfortable. If you have a fireplace in the room where you are creating your snug good on you! Count yourself lucky! You can add a fireplace if you want to by adding an electric version. You can make a faux fireplace with a mantel and the frame of a fireplace against a wall. Then set battery operated lanterns in front of it or a lamp or something to give the illusion of warm light. Fairy lights in lanterns also evoke a warm inviting even magical atmosphere. I am all about ambience!

I love fireplaces and we often use our fireplace in winter when we hang out in our family room. However my living room is our snug and there is no fireplace. As Shakespeare put it, “There’s the rub!” Never fear though! I have compensated for that. Here are my ideas:

  • We have three large windows that fill the room with natural light. I arranged my furniture facing the windows to take advantage of them.
  • In a corner on display against a wall, I have Quaking Aspen branches that I brought in from my yard. They broke off one of our trees and I couldn’t bear to part with them! The stand tall and I hung unique lights on them to accent and make that corner look whimsical. (I am also all about the whimsical!)I set a bird I made on the branches and hung a small willow tree wreath that I made during the summer.
  • I also use a lamp with soft light to light this room in the dark. (It’s Christmas time and I set up a manger with Baby Jesus in it and shone the lamp on it for people to see the babe while giving my room soft light.

Fill A Basket With Blankets

Of course to get the ultimate coziness in a room you need plenty of soft furry blankets. A casual basket filled with folded blankets is not only inviting but just the right touch for your snug room.

Candlelight Is Key

In the Nordic countries they use a lot of real candlelight to light their snug. Beeswax candles or unscented are a healthy way of lighting your room. Tea lights, tapers, whatever you have on hand make a beautiful warm statement. I recently bought a gift for my daughter. It was a wax warmer that resembled a small fireplace. It was so perfect because it doesn’t have an open flame. As you add the wax melts to it, it lights up like a fireplace. This would be a fun addition to your Snug. Candlelight is romantic and it is inviting to any room.

Green Plants

Consider adding fresh or faux plants to your snug room. Choose plants that will thrive according to the amount of light they need. Plants add some life to a room. Hang them on the wall. Set them on a table. Make sure they are not too much trouble to care for as this room is suppose to bring you peace and tranquility. Perhaps

Simple and Beautiful Decor

When you decorate your snug, consider that less is more. Choose carefully what you will decorate your room with. When you view your room, does it look peaceful? Clutter is a no no! it needs to invoke a feeling of warmth, coziness, and peacefulness. It needs to invite your guests into its doorway and make you want to stay a while.

Furniture Friendly

Arrange your furniture so it is tight knit but comfortable. Let me explain. Put a main couch against the wall. Add a couple of chairs on each side of the couch but place them on each side of a coffee table (the short ends) Like this:

You can put other chairs in the room if it is big enough to accommodate them. Make a little reading corner by placing a blanket and large comfy pillows on a chest pushed against the wall. Place a chair with a footstool for another cozy reading corner. Your room can accommodate several people visiting and enjoying the calm. Or just you reading a book and relaxing.

Room Color

Your room can be completely white. You can paint your walls warm or light just depending on what makes you feel at peace and comfortable in your room. When we bought our home, our front room had one wall painted red. I don’t like it but my husband does. So it has stayed.

I covered our plaid couch with soft cozy blankets with red deer on them and blue accents which tie into my curtains and a cabin painting on the wall. Observe your room and see the colors at different times of the day. Try to capture a peaceful room by not adding too much of decor or furniture. You want it to be cozy but uncluttered.

Add A Rug

If your floors are wood, make your room more comfortable by adding a rug. Rugs come in so many beautiful designs and colors that you can shop around until you find the right one to add to your room decor and create a cozy abode.

Book Nook

We already talked about creating reading corners. Add some books to your snug. Stack a few by your couch or put them in a creative type container like an open suitcase or a galvanized container. Then take time during your day to escape inside a book. Relax and take a load off. Even little snippets of time like ten to fifteen minutes can make help you reboot and enjoy your day.

Wear Cozy Clothing

I know this isn’t home decor but cozy clothing can complete your snug. Warm sweaters and soft socks just have something about them that make us feel like we are getting a big hug! Wrapped in warmth and softness it definitely adds to the ambience of a snug. Have a container with comfy slippers at the entrance of your room so they are handy to put on and enjoy. There are perks to having a snug!

Stock Your Room With A Puzzle And Games

Set a puzzle on your coffee table. Have a game of chess or checkers set up and ready to go. This room can be not only inviting but really fun if you design it right. What I mean, is that you have puzzles and games at the ready so when friends and family enter your room, you can bring on the fun as you visit.

Branches Make For Beauty

Natural branches make a beautiful statement when you bring them in from outside. I am surrounded by beautiful trees in my fifty year old English Tudor home. When branches break off from the wind, I often gather them and use them in floral arrangements or hang them on our walls. I sometimes put them on our fireplace mantel. My husband thinks I am like a kid bringing bugs or pets into the house only I bring in twigs and branches. They look so natural and stately.

Now get to it and identify a space in your home to make a cozy hygge niche where you and your family can relax and enjoy time together. You will be glad you did!
