Free Swiss Flag Patchwork Pillow Pattern And 6 Ways To Decorate With It

When you welcome guests or family into a gathering room in your home, you want them to feel comfy and cozy there. A really simple way to give your room that special at home vibe is to add a cute pillow or two to your room. Choose the colors you want. This pattern is free and once you cut out the patchwork squares, you can sew up your pillow and stuff it in an afternoon. It measures about 13″ long x 8″ wide. Get creative and try my 6 unique ideas for decorating with it.

  • Use a 6.5 square ruler or make your own. (You can change the size on this pillow.)
  • Choose 2 colors of fabric. I chose the traditional red and white colors but you can choose any two colors that you want. (You will need about a 1/2 yard of red fabric and a fat quarter of white fabric.)
  • You will cut out 10 red and 5 white patchwork squares to make your pillow topper.
  • You will need some coordinating backing fabric.
  • You will need some poly-fil stuffing.
  • Look for creative places to display your pillow. Like sitting in a basket, on a couch, on a kitchen counter or kitchen table, placed in an entry way chair, on a piano, or display in a bedroom.
Although I used red and white fabric for my Swiss flag patchwork pillow, any two colors of your choice will do.

Choose 2 Colors

You probs know the Swiss flag is red and white. I knew I wanted a red and white Swiss flag patchwork pillow to coordinate with my couch and other pillows so for that reason I went with red and white fabric. However, get creative. If red and white won’t coordinate with the colors of the room where you want to display it, use two colors that work best for you. Your choice of colors will depend most of all on where you want to display it. You can use fabric with texture if you would like instead of just cotton fabric like I did with mine.

Use a 6.5 ruler to start your squares.

Cut Out Your Patchwork Squares

You will be so surprised how easy it is to make this patchwork pillow. It really is cute too so you will love the outcome. Use a 6.5 square ruler to cut out your red and white fabric patchwork squares. Then take one square and fold it in half. Cut it down the middle. Fold over again and cut in half. You will have four smaller square each measuring 3.5″ x 3.5″. You will need a total of 10 red squares and 5 white squares. (Or if you use alternate colors, well you know what to do.)

Follow this layout for sewing your patchwork squares together to make your pillow topper.

Sew Your Patchwork Pillow Topper

  • Begin at the top (which is really the side of your pillow) but this is a really easy way to sew your patchwork pillow together. Sew 3 red squares together.
  • Lightly press.
  • Sew a red, white, and another red square side by side.
  • Press.
  • Sew these two rows of patchwork squares together. (As you can tell from the picture above the red squares will be at the top of your pillow sewing it this way.
  • Sew three white patchwork squares together.
  • Press.
  • Sew the white squares to the row of the red, white, and red squares.
  • Next sew a red, white, and red square together.
  • Press.
  • Sew this patchwork row to your row of 3 white squares.
  • Press.
  • Your last row, sew the last 3 red squares together.
  • Press.
Iron your topper before adding backing to it.

Add Backing

Choose the fabric you want for the backing of your pillow. Place your pillow topper on your backing fabric and cut the backing to fit your topper. Now place your topper and your backing right sides together. Sew a 1/4″ seam around the edge leaving a small area for stuffing your pillow. Trim off excess fabric and turn right side out. Press. Add the poly fil stuffing through the open seam area on your pillow you left un sewn. Fill Your pillow as full as you want it to be. Hand sew the opening closed. Voila! Your pillow is done and it is ready to brighten up your room. Completed pillow measures about 13″ long x 8″ wide.

6 Ideas For Displaying Your Pillow

#1 Your Couch

Of course the most obvious place to display your newly made pillow would be to place it on a couch. Your pillow can be displayed in a variety of interior design styles. I actually made two of these pillows. One for our loveseat and one for our long couch. Love the matchy matchy quaint cottage look of two Swiss flag patchwork pillows.

This cute oblong pillow stands out in a bunch of pillows.

#2 Display In A Basket

Display your patchwork pillow in a basket.

I love baskets of all shapes and sizes. I love hanging baskets like this and thought my pillow could definitely sit inside for an unexpected fun way to display it. Perhaps you have a basket sitting on a shelf or a table. Why not slip your Swiss flag patchwork pillow inside it and give it a try. Cute and unexpected.

#3 Display In Your Kitchen

Find a fun place in your kitchen to display your patchwork pillow.

I know out of the box right? I love this area of my kitchen. My husband made the table and behind it stands an old door I bought years ago from a neighbor. Hanging on the door is a wreath I made of willow tree branches. I love using and displaying handmade cutting boards and old vintage china on it. This is a perfect place to put a cute patchwork pillow. Think outside the box when it comes to your kitchen. Where is a fun little nook that you can put your pillow.

#4 Piano Decor

Try putting your patchwork pillow on your piano.

I actually have two pianos. Yes you read right. Two. One in our living room and one in our family room. We inherited my husband’s mother’s piano. We gave it to one of our daughters who is attending college. So it stays in our home until she gets more settled. Oh she plays it when she comes to visit but since she lives and attends school two hours away, it only gets played occasionally. I think the pillow looks sweet and rustic in this display. A shout out to my father in law who has since passed on. He made the cross stitched ram that sits on this piano. He made it for my hubby. It looks like a painting. His work was so exquisite.

Notice how this Swiss flag pillow pops displayed on the comfy chair in my entry way.

#5 Entry Way

When the spring arrived, I wanted to refresh my entry way. So I put an easy chair next to an old dresser. I threw a chenille blanket over the green chair. I added an old window, some stacked grapevine trees, a cross stitched pillow (again cross stitch done by my father in law). and a ceramic white pitcher filled with red wild rose branches sitting on top of my dresser. It sits right next to my stairs. If you have a table, a bench, a chair whatever in your entry way, find just the right spot for your patchwork pillow. Even maybe tuck your pillow on top of a pair of rain boots. Might make a really cute display.

Adding 2 pillows makes a bold statement to your bedding.

#6 Bedroom

A bed is a logical place to put a pillow like this. It can sit on a chair, a bench or even the top of your dresser. Get creative. Maybe you will want to make more than one of these pillows. If you have bunkbeds or a couple of twin beds side by side it would be really adorable to have matching Swiss flag pillows on each bed.
