I could really get used to the modern farmhouse style. It has so many beautiful elements that I love. Seriously, I think I might rethink decorating my home in this simple, elegant, rustic, modern style. Typically I am not in love with modern but this style makes it look so inviting! With these twelve decorating styling steps you can take each room in your home and do a modern farmhouse makeover step by step!

Start With Lighting

One of the easiest and quickest ways to change the look of a room next to paint, is the lighting. Fairly easy to do and immediately changes the design of your room. When it comes to lighting in Modern Farmhouse setting, you would want to consider metal lights. A hanging lantern type pendant or industrial looking chandelier would be a great addition to giving your room a modern farmhouse influence.

Shiplap It Up

Shiplap isn’t going out of style any time soon. Especially when done right. There are so many things you can do with it. For contrast paint it a dark color on one wall and white on the rest of the walls. Paint a shiplap fireplace. Cover your kitchen range hood with shiplap. How about covering a wall behind your bed in the master bedroom. You’ve probably seen some home owners that have it on their ceiling. Look at your room and decide where you could put it to enhance your modern farmhouse look. Bathroom walls done in shiplap look great too!

Are you familiar with the board and batten style? It is a very stylish way of doing your walls with wide wood boards alternated with narrow strips usually painted white. It is great in the English Cottage style, Coastal, and Modern Farmhouse style. It is also used on an exterior of a modern farmhouse home.

Exposed Beams And Other Options

When we walked into our home 8 years ago and looked up, there they were, exposed beams. It was love at first sight haha! My hubby and I love the look! Keep in mind that the home we were considering buying was a 50 year old home! But it had exposed beams and needless to say we bought it. There were of course other things we loved about the home but it was a definite plus!

You can add some beams down a hall or in a bedroom in addition to a family room or living room. Wherever it makes sense in your design. Don’t despair though if you can’t add beams to your home. Think about this idea. Wrap your doorways into your kitchen, family room, bedrooms, or living rooms with wood. It would definitely give a nod to a Modern Farmhouse look in your room.

Exposed Brick or Stone

Brick and stone are beautiful decor elements used in a modern farmhouse. Use it as a backsplash in your kitchen or as an accent wall in your kitchen or other areas of your home. A fireplace is a great place for brick or stone if done right. Some brick can look outdated so make sure you choose brick that has a modern vibe to it and fits with your color palette.

If you are looking to make a bold and beautiful design statement, add some stone to a wall in your home. You could also go halfway up your wall with it and then add some shiplap on the upper half of the wall. White shiplap with next to a wall covered in stone is so striking and beautiful in the modern farmhouse!

Black Accents

Black is in when you are trying to achieve a modern farmhouse style in your home. Well not lots of black but black accents. Black light fixtures make a beautiful modern yet farmhouse statement. Bring in some black in your furnishings, rugs, or pillows. Black shiplap as an accent wall or wrapped on a range hood is a stunning way to add modern farmhouse style to your home.

Stainless Steel

Fill your kitchen with stainless steel appliances. Modern farmhouse decor includes stainless steel accents. You can mix and match a white fridge with a stainless steel dishwasher and a stainless steel range or a black fridge with the other two main appliances. If you are doing a new build, go ahead and purchase all three appliances in stainless steel finish. My home came with a white fridge and although we are doing a remodel I will keep it. It is a french door style fridge and a large size. So not bad looking for an older fridge. However my new range and dishwasher are stainless steel. Sink faucets can be stainless steel or brushed nickel to mirror your beautiful appliances. This. could also extend to your light fixtures. So find ways to incorporate stainless steel accents into your kitchen decor.

Accent In Rustic Wood

There are so many ways to put rustic wood in your space to elevate and add modern farmhouse decor to your space. I just love rustic bread boards. They are mostly for looks and not so much for function but they are amazing and can add a lot to your space!

Wood bowls, wood vases, wood shelves, wood tables, nightstands, wood corbels, wood chairs, wood fireplace mantels, wood trays, wood frames, and wood countertops also called butcher block are great ways to add some rustic wood to the rooms in your home. Modern farmhouse is all about rustic wood accents.

As you look at each room, sit down for a minute and consider the space. Where can you add or put some rustic wood to accent your room? Carefully survey room by room, and find beautiful ways to decorate with rustic wood. If you have a hard time picturing how to infuse a room with rustic wood, look through magazines and online until you find a room that you love. Then try and mimic the look that you want with rustic wood decor.

I found a stack of wood boards under my deck that have aged and use them in my home decor. I set a board on my entryway dresser and then put decor on it. An easy and cheap way to put rustic wood in my decor. You could purchase a pine board not stained and not painted. Cut it to size then set vases or pictures whatever you feel fits in the space to add rustic decor to your room.

Concrete Accents

I am sure you have seen either online or in person cement countertops. They are a thing! Beautiful and streamlined. This is one way to use concrete in your decor to create a modern farmhouse. You can also add vases , planters, concrete trays, concrete tiles, concrete flooring, etc.. to put in your modern farmhouse decor.

On a side note, you can simulate concrete by painting with gray chalk paint mixed with baking soda. You need 50 percent chalk paint and 50 percent baking soda. Mix it well and then paint on glass or wood candlesticks, ceramic platters, or plastic or wood vases. It gives a subtle concrete plaster look to your piece that would be in line with your modern farmhouse decor. Set your concrete decor on a coffee table or a fireplace mantle.

Paint For A Modern Farmhouse Look

Paint as you probably know is such an easy way to change the look of any room. Paint can actually influence your mood and how you feel more than you might think so it is important to be intentional when choosing a paint color for each room in your home. My paint guide can help you choose a paint color with confidence. Then you can apply that in choosing a color that helps you achieve the modern farmhouse style. Typically those include neutrals, off white and layers of gray. Simple colors yet very dramatic when paired with a darker accent color in a room of your home.

Cozy Not Cluttered

To get the modern farmhouse look you can decorate in layers. Once your room is painted and furnished you want to add items that will finish the room and make it welcoming, interesting, and cozy without adding clutter to your room. The layers or “decor” you add should reflect your personality and character. What do I mean? Well think about the following textures and personality into your home:

  • Lighting- Do you have enough light in the space throughout the day and pay attention to the style of lighting you use in your room. This includes overhead hanging lights and free standing lamps.
  • Rugs-Rugs immediately add texture and warmth to a room. They can also help define the space. It might feel right to add one rug with another over the top in your space.
  • Art- Wall art can add a lot of visual interest to your modern farmhouse room. You don’t have to spend a lot on it to have a nice piece to display on a wall in the room you are decorating. Shop your local thrift store, an online art gallery where you can buy a print of a famous picture, download artwork on Etsy, or take a large canvas and paint something abstract if you like. Wall art can include shelves, and what you display on them. Leaning an old door against a wall and hanging a wreath on it is considered wall art. What sings to you in your space. What feels right. you may have to play with this for awhile to see what will give your room warmth and texture.
  • Coziness-This includes pillows, throws, footstools, things that you use to get comfortable in your space. Don’t overdo it here! Keep your pillows in check and tuck your throws into a large basket that you set on the floor by your seating. Display a few well loved books for someone to relax and look through. This could include classic novels and large beautiful travel or decor books. Perhaps a couple of magazines as well.
  • Natural Elements-Fresh or faux plants make an inviting statement in a room. A few cool rocks that you found hiking could accent your room on a wooden tray. The trick again is to keep it to a minimum.

Clutter makes you feel uneasy and stressed. Keep this in mind when you layer the rooms in your home. You want them to be inviting and welcoming and unstressed by lots of stuff that you don’t need. Study rooms online that depict the modern farmhouse style. Follow that lead but infuse the room with your own creative personality interpretation of what you think modern farmhouse style looks like to you.

Open Style

Along with keeping your rooms uncluttered, open concept style rooms are a major part of the flow and look of a modern farmhouse styled home. If you are building a new home, design it in such a way that your main rooms have fewer walls and flow into each other without a wall as a boundary.

If you are in an existing home, perhaps you can remove a wall (as long as it isn’t a bearing wall) to make it more open. If this isn’t an option for you, perhaps you can cut out a large portion of the wall that will allow more light to flow into it and give the illusion of open concept. Just a thought to consider.

Add Old With The New

Add some vintage accents. Mixing old with the new creates a fresh and modern farmhouse. You decide what type vintage items you place in a room. An old sign on a fireplace with a concrete vase and a beautiful wooden mantel make a beautiful display. Set an old chunky wooden tray with feet by your sink and place a fancy new soap dispenser and sponge on it. Get creative. There are many stylish was to mesh the old with the new for just the right modern farmhouse look.
