Dreamy Paint And Some Wallpaper
Wondering what color to paint your walls that will make your room a cozy comfortable place? How about neutrals and pastels? Also warm colors such as golds, muted reds, dusty pink including a warm white versus a cool white. If you have a color you adore and want to use it in your bedroom, find color swatches that represent the color hue you like and tone down brights. You can add pops of color but keep them at a minimum. You can use darker colors like dark gray, black, or purple just experiment a bit before you paint the whole room to see how it makes you feel. After all paint does influence how we feel and we are talking cozy right? (If you need a quick tutorial on choosing paint colors check out How To Choose Paint Color With Confidence .
A word if you please about wallpaper. Yes it is making a comeback. For a bold statement put it behind your bed on one wall. It doesn’t have to be a big splash of color though. It can be soft neutral tones, soft color florals or a simple pattern. Stay away from anything too busy. You don’t want to get agitated when you walk into your bedroom.
Sheets Are Not All The Same
If you can, splurge a little on your sheets. If you buy cheap sheets you will be skimping on quality and quality sheets make a huge difference in comfort on your bed! Start by choosing a color when shopping for sheets. Have in mind what you want. What types of fabric are you ok with against your skin? Tencel, flannel, cotton percale, cotton sateen, organic cotton, chambray, or Belgian flax linen? Then keep in mind thread count. The higher the count, the nicer the sheet and the nicer the sheet, the more you will pay. However it is worth spending a little more for sheets that feel good against your skin, wick moisture, and make it more cozy. 300 thread count and up means a better sheet.
Fit Your Pillows To The Size Of Your Bed
Did you know this is a thing? Putting the right size pillows on your bed? It took me a few years to figure this out. We downsized our bed from a King to a Queen. Our pillows were King size because of our King bed. Not a good fit! You should put Standard or Queen size pillows on Queen, Double, Full, and aTwin bed. Reserve your supersize King for the King size bed. They fit so much better! King pillows fall off consistently on a Queen size bed and it makes things crowded at the top of your bed if you have King size pillows side by side.
Euro pillows add support and beauty! Put a couple on your bed in front of your standard pillows. In front of that add other decorative pillows. It helps layer your bed and makes it look and feel so very cozy!
Change Your Blanket With the Season
With each season, you may want to change the blankets and throws on your bed because their purpose changes with the heat and the cold. Love me some chunky soft blankets for the winter months. Plaid, flannel, and furry throws make your bed cozier. In the spring and summer, these blankets will be too heavy and too much for your bed. So switch them out for lighter cooler blankets and you probably won’t layer your bed quite as much. It is important when it is cold that you have enough blankets to stay warm but so you don’t get hot. The hotter months of the year you want blankets that are lightweight and help wick moisture keeping you comfy and cool.
Seasonal Decor
You probably decorate your porch, your family room, and your kitchen with each season or holiday that comes along. Why not your bedroom? This can only make your room more cozy. Add holiday pillows to your bed along with a holiday throw. Hang a holiday wreath over the bed or on a mirror in your room. Set some flowers on your bed with a pumpkin and some faux flowers. Add Christmas lights and greenery hanging over your bed. Get your style on and make your room look soft and festive in any holiday you celebrate.
Cozy Chairs
You can make your room really inviting by adding a couple of chairs at the end of your bed. They can even be wood dining room chairs to soft decorative chairs. Place a pillow in each chair for added style and beauty. If you would rather bring in a bench at put a pad on it for comfort. Throw some fake fur over the back of it.
Wreath Over The Bed
Wreaths just have this feeling of beauty and warmth. Like when you approach someone’s front door and there is a wreath hanging on it, you just feel like this is a welcoming place or at least I do. Do the same with your bedroom. I love designing and making wreaths. It just elevates the look of any room. You can design and create your own. Pinecone wreath, greenery, paper yes even paper. There are several really easy paper wreaths you can make to hang in your home. I’ll show you or at least talk you through it. Then you choose a wreath and style it your way.
- Pinecone wreath- This says you like Rustic Chic maybe country but you like the natural look. It is pretty easy to make one of these.
Supplies: Cardboard circle with middle cut out or straw wreath.
Pinecones
Hot Glue Gun, and glue sticks
Ok gather these supplies and glue away. Glue pinecones around your wreath form. Stack pinecones on top of pinecones until you feel your have the look you want. Top with a burlap or even velvet bow. The fabric you use for your bow will also influence the look of your wreath.
- Greenery or Fall Leaves Wreath- This you can easily change with the seasons. Here is what you will need to make this type of wreath.
Supplies: 2 Grapevine Wreaths wired together
Greenery Garland or Fall Leaves Garland
Florist wire
So take your two grapevine wreaths. Yes you read right! Wire the two together with the florist wire. Next take your greenery garland or your fall leaf garland and wire it in a few places to your grapevine wreath. Add your bow or no bow and that’s all there is to it!
- Book Paper Wreath-This is unique and different and can fall into several style categories.
Supplies: A book
Hot Glue Gun
Styrofoam wreath base or cut out a circle from cardboard
Tear the pages from your book. I know it goes against the grain…destroying a book but it is for a design purpose and make sure it isn’t a book you adore or want to read haha! Roll each page into a cone shape and glue the edge so it holds it shape. Carefully glue the cones all the way around your wreath base. Glue the point of your cone towards the middle of the wreath. Add some fabric strips. Glue them on one side of your wreath and let it hang long on your wreath. This gives it a carefree beautiful look. Or add a faux flower, fabric flowers, or even pinecones. Whatever you want to put on it to give it the look you love.
Create Ambience With Lighting
When I walk in my bedroom at night, I want the light to be soft and inviting not bold and bright like the sun! Hang some fairy lights on your headboard and other places around your room. Put lamps by your bedside that have warm soft lightbulbs in them. Add some battery operated candles to your room. I was shopping recently with one of my daughters at HobbyLobby and she found a beautiful sconce candle holder with a mirror on it. I love the green patina. If you need it to be a different color you can always paint it. Place one of these on each side of your bed and put a battery operated candle on it. If that isn’t ambience, I don’t know what is!
Declutter
Clutter of any type destroys peace and calmness. Get your vacuum out, a garbage sack, and a box. Maybe a really big box… Start throwing out anything you don’t need anymore. If you are like me, I tend to leave piles around my bedroom. Pick up clothes and put them away. If you have clothing you don’t absolutely love or wear, drop it in the box for goodwill or have a pile for giving stuff away. Ok don’t even think about hiding it under your bed! Get rid of all the clutter. It will feel so much better and your room will have more potential for coziness! Am I right?
An Under The Bed Bookshelf Or Cozy Reading Nook
I looked around my room and saw a lot of books. Books that cluttered my room. So I came up with this idea of an wait for it…under the bed bookshelf. It still had to look nice and fit under my bed. My bed is on bed risers so this idea I came up worked out perfectly. I bought a large square galvanized container sold at Wal Mart. This is how I did it.
Paint the container white. Distress it a bit. Put feet on it. (Only put feet on it if the container still fits under your bed. Put books side by side in the container. Then put a wooden plank on top of the books. Place another stack of books side by side on top of the wooden plank.
It is convenient and good looking. You have your books at the ready when you want to take a minute for yourself to enjoy a book or two. Also that crazy clutter is held at bay! Use it in a corner of your bedroom if you would rather put it near your cozy corner than under your bed. Either works!
Photos That Inspire
Photos can be formal or informal depending on what you like. Hang a photo garland on a wall. Attach photos with chunky clothespins to a strand of twine and add fairy lights. You can hang some photos. of your family or set them around your room like a cute photo on your night stand. Frame a photo fo you and your hubby. I have a book my daughter made of my husband and I through a photo company online. It sits on a dresser across the room where we can see it everyday.
It’s A Sign
If you have a saying that you like, hang it on your wall. A good place to find a sign is on Etsy where you can download and frame it. There are so many cute signs and they really add to a space.
Creative Night Stand
You can make a night stand out of almost anything. Find an old stool. Paint it white or cover it with fabric. Take a log and put a round piece of wood on the top of it. Secure it and stain or paint the top or leave it natural and paint it with a clear varnish finish. Come on! Look around your home and see what you have if you are looking for a night stand. If you absolutely can’t find what you want, check your local thrift store for your inspiration.
No Sew Curtains
In my bedroom hangs one of the easiest and most beautiful decor elements that I created. It was easy. It was no sew. I bought a bedspread and cut it in half. I bought some ring clips and put the rings through my curtain rod. Then I clipped my bedspread at even intervals. I love them. Let your curtains pool on the floor. It is a romantic and very cozy look.
Install A Light Fan Fixture
A fan is a good idea to have in your bedroom. This helps circulate the air in the summer and the winter. It helps your heating and cooling system be more efficient and helps keep you cooler when it is hot. Isn’t it worth being more comfortable? Comfort equals cozy!
Real or Faux Fireplace
If you are fortunate enough to have a fireplace in your room, how awesome for you! There is just something about a fireplace that is so cozy, comfortable, and alluring. If you don’t have a gas or wood fireplace in your bedroom, you might consider putting a mantel and molding down the wall to look like a fireplace. Sometimes you can find old mantels in antique shops. You can paint it or keep it as is depending on what look your are trying to create in your room design. There are many faux fireplaces in homes and you can even add a hearth to display decor or a basket of wood on the hearth. Fun to decorate and adds beauty to any bedroom.
Make Your Bed
I know this is an easy fix but it does make a huge difference in how cozy your room is. Once your bed is made, it is the doorway to coziness in your bedroom. Take a moment every day to put your bed back together and tidy it up adding your pillows and any layering that you add to your bed.
Goodies An Water By Your Bed
Fill a basket with bottled water and some goodies or light snacks by your bedside. That way when you are relaxing or reading you can reward yourself. Don’t go overboard but after a long day it is kind of nice to treat your self to something yummy.
Clean Your Closet
This one is for me! Clean and organize your closet with a hamper, baskets, crates, shelves whatever it takes! Declutter (humm where have you heard this before???) when you are decluttering your room. This will help make your room look more peaceful and add to the coziness.
You Need A Decorative Hanger
Hang a decorative hanger on your wall next to the bathroom or somewhere in your bedroom. I need two one for me and one for my hubby. Hang some nice robes on them and put comfy slippers underneath the hanging robes. That spells cozy in an instant!
Battery Operated Candle
I know it is tempting to burn candles because they smell so good but candles can affect your health. So be wise here. There is such a variety of battery operated candles you don’t have to worry about safety or health issues. Plus it is cost effective. Try using these candles in your bedroom.
Wispy Canopy
DIY your own canopy with bridal tulle or some lightweight white chiffon. Hang it over your bed and let it fall down behind your bed. This creates not just a cozy appeal it is very romantic looking.
Wicker Baskets
Decorate with wicker baskets around your room. They can help organize a corner in your room, like books, odds and ends, plants, bottled water, snacks (as already mentioned),etc… Even hang wicker baskets on the wall and fill it with a floral arrangement. This adds a natural coziness to your bedroom.
Bring The Outside In
Bringing a bit of nature into your space can make it more peaceful. Plants probably come to mind but how about hanging a branch on your wall and then attach colorful leaves (just a few) for the fall. Change it out to a bit of greenery or even some faux evergreen sprigs with lights for Christmas. Put a vase on your nightstand filled with tall twigs. I do this all the time throughout my home. Love twigs and sticks. My husband would probably tell you that I am worse than the kids when it comes to bringing stuff from our yard to the inside!
Charging Space Away From Your Bedside
What??? You think I am not serious but I am. Charge your phone away from your bedside. If you look at your phone before you go to bed, this wakes up your mind and may keep you wide awake! Coziness means your space is conducive to sleep. Don’t chance it! Sleep is critical to your health so guard it well and make your bedroom healthy for you so you can enjoy more coziness.
Light With Lanterns
Lanterns signal warm and cozy. Put a few lanterns around your room. Perhaps hang it from your ceiling by your bedside or set on a style on a dresser or on the floor near your fireplace if you have one. Here is a great tip! Fill your lanterns with fairy lights. Very magical kind of cozy!
