Make Your Bedroom Look Christmassy In 5 Simple Steps: Quick, Easy, & Budget Friendly

Tis the season and you want to add a Christmas look to your room. It’s not that hard to give your room a Christmas facelift. You can do it in just five steps. The best part about it is it doesn’t take much time, it is easy to do, and the piece de resistance, it doesn’t have to cost much.

  • Put a Christmas looking throw on the top of your comforter.
  • Add Christmas pillows to your bed by: wrapping your existing throw pillows with Christmas fabric or cut out 2 squares of Christmas fabric and quickly sew a Christmas pillow. Sew a long piece of Christmas fabric to the edge of a pillowcase. Tie ribbons around pillows.
  • Look through old or new magazines to find a picture that has a Christmas theme, a snow covered barn or something wintery. Then frame it with a dollar store frame. Hang it half above your head board and half above it. Add more than one if you like.
  • Attach Christmas greenery or a wreath on your headboard. If you have lots of pinecones, glue each to a ribbon and tie the ribbons together and hang them above your bed.
  • Fairy lights will add Christmas magic to your bedroom.

In all my decorating and hustling and bustling at Christmas, decorating my bedroom is usually the last thing on my list if I even get to it. This year I decided would be different. Christmas is my favorite holiday. I decided I needed to do something even if it was just a little bit of effort to “unscrooge” (don’t think this is even a word but I bet you know what I mean ) my room. You deserve a bit of Christmas cheer in your room too. No worries though. These five steps don’t take much time to do and by keeping it simple will fill your room with a slice of Christmas cheer heaven.

Put a simple Christmas throw or blanket on top of your comforter.

#1 Shop Your Home First For a Throw Blanket

By adding a Christmas throw to your bedding, you can change the whole look of your room. I have had matching Christmas throws with reindeer on them for years that we keep in our family room in case someone wants a blanket to cuddle in while watching tv. I grabbed one and put it on the top of my bed. It doesn’t cover my entire bed but it makes a cute Christmas statement. Even a furry white throw can give the look of a winter wonderland if that is what you have on hand or you want to use it after Christmas. Almost everywhere you go you can find an inexpensive Christmas throw to match your existing bedding. Start with this step, take a deep breath and get your Christmas on! And now step #2.

Pillows can add a Christmassy touch and you can make your own pillows simply.

#2 Pillow Fight Anyone?

Pillows are the cream of the crop when it comes to bedding. There are several ways to add Christmas to your to your pillows. I will share them with you. Pillows can add a touch of Christmas spice like adding ginger to gingerbread or cinnamon to snickerdoodles. Get my drift?

a. Take some Christmas colored fabric or fabric with a Christmas print and wrap one of your throw pillows in the fabric. Leave enough fabric on each side so you can tie a ribbon around each end like a piece of candy. Or if your pillows are the right color for your Christmas throw, wrap a ribbon around the pillow and tie a bow. Stick small greenery through the bow and attach a pinecone or Christmas ornament to it. Instant Christmas!

I love the tree pillow I designed. I plan to sell these pillows and bought some fine wool blankets that I cut up for trees. Love them so much!

b. If you don’t have throw pillows, you can make one or more throw pillows by cutting out the shape you want to make your pillow. For example, cut two pieces of Christmas fabric in a square or rectangle shape. You could even use red or white felt for the main pillow then cut out some snowflakes or trees with contrasting felt colors. Like red on white or white on red. Both pieces should be the same size. Sew around the square leaving an opening big enough to stuff with poly fill stuffing (you can buy at Wal Mart if you don’t have any.) Sew the opening closed.

Quickly sew up some pillowcases to put on your main pillows by grabbing some fabric from your stash and short cut finishing the edge with pinking shears.

c. I sewed up some super simple pillow cases for my king size pillows. I had some fabric on hand that matched my Christmas bedding colors. I just folded the fabric over and sewed around one short end and a long end. I didn’t hem the edge but finished them with pinking shears for a cute simple finish. A quick shortcut when you don’t have time to make your pillowcases fancy. Or add colored trim that matches your bedding colors like ric rac or pom pom trim to the edge of your pillowcases. Almost instant Christmas decor and done in a jiffy!

d. Take festive Christmas ribbon or even Wrights satin blanket ribbon the color of your Christmas bedding and iron it open because it is extra wide and has a crease down the middle. Tie a ribbon around your throw pillows for an elevated, instant Christmas look.

e. Okay just can’t resist one more fun idea that just came to me. You know last year’s ugly sweater you bought for the ugly sweater contest? Top sew the bottom and the sleeves closed. Stuff it full of poly fill stuffing and sew the neck closed. There ya go. Another Christmas pillow.

Get a picture from a magazine or use the cover and frame it inexpensively.

#3 Quick & Inexpensive Picture Decor

Go through some of your old magazines and find a Christmas picture that you like. The picture could be an old barn in winter, birds in the snow, whatever you can find that you like and that will compliment the colors of your Christmas throw on your bed. The frame it. Three pictures in a row would look nice. You could also print a Christmas picture from an online source. The Graphics Fairy has free downloads and lots of Christmas graphics to choose from. Etsy for an affordable price has pictures you can buy to frame for decor over your bed. I have to admit that my picture over my bed is a watercolor picture we cherish done by my sweet mother in law years ago.

Frames don’t have to be fancy. You can dress them up. If you have frames you can use great. If not, check out your local dollar store or local thrift shop. Your local thrift shop might even have a Christmas picture already framed you could buy for probably less than five dollars. Hang the picture or pictures you choose above your bed. Once you hang your picture, add ribbon dripping down from it, make a bow and glue to the top or add some faux or fresh greenery to the picture. Glue pinecones around the frame for a more rustic country look.

Add a wreath to your wall and let it hang over your head board.

#4 Hang A Christmas Wreath On Your Head Board

This is easy peasy. If you have an extra faux wreath you have purchased in the past, hang it just above and on the headboard. (Purchase or make a wreath like this one Placement is important because you don’t want to hit it while you are sleeping. Some head boards are taller than others. Hang it below the picture you hung on your wall above the bed. Or make a smaller version of this fresh wreath to hang on your bed Fresh Christmas Wreath For The Front Door Half Pine Cones Half Greenery Add some ribbon, or long fabric tails to match your Christmas throw on your bed. It will smell good and look nice! Both a win win!

If you have a bunch of pine cones that drop off your trees in your yard like I do, then gather a variety or whatever type pine cones you have and glue pine cones all around and on a straw wreath base. Add some ribbon flourish and let that be your Christmas wreath. Simple, rustic, and beautiful.

You could also put a garland either fresh or faux across the top of your head board and add lights to it for a homey look. Garnish with pine cones and some berries.

# 5 Twinkling Lights

Nothing says magical like fairy lights. They can add a bit of Christmas enchantment. Add them to a mirror, add them to your headboard, to greenery, your wreath, or your picture, a plant in your room, etc…I love that they are battery operated. Some are on a timer so you don’t even have to think about turning them on and off. Unless you want no light when you sleep. That’s ok too. (I still have to do this step.) Fairy lights definitely spell Christmas so incorporate them into your Christmassy bedroom and relax and enjoy the view!
